About
paintings
on silk

Paintings on silk have an innate luminosity, richness and fluidity of color, that are unparalleled in any other art form. The silk paintings shown in this gallery are magnificent, flowing images that depict a range of color possibilities from soft, elegant hues to bold, present statements. Each painting invites the viewer to enter the interplay of light and form, and dance....

The process of creating a painting on silk begins with suspending white silk on a frame. Melted wax, or gutta (a natural water resistant material), is then applied to draw lines and create white areas. Dyes are painted onto the fabric, and the dyed spaces are manipulated to achieve various effects. Protected between clean sheets of newsprint, the painting is then rolled and placed in a steamer for several hours until the dye is permanent. Finally, the painting is cleaned, mounted on a backing board, and matted for framing.

Prices of the paintings in this gallery include matting and backing board; packaging and shipping will be added.
